June Poem of the Month Light of the Moon
By jeannerene
The moonlight held its breath
in patient vigil outside her cross-paned window.
She seemed to sense its warmth,
and looked beyond me to glow and glimmer
waltzing upon the lake’s surface, dancing,
skipping between the ripples,
smiling at the ease of time’s merriment.
It came that she closed her eyes,
and with a gasp took in and then refused age
with a lingering hiss. She lay quiet.
~ from the window I watched the merry current
lap against the lake shore. I was not deceived
by the illusionary randomness of sway and swell
of wave, but looked into precise measure,
understood the mathematics of each whitecap,
and yet I knew tonight
the moonbeam held her slender waist,
swept her across the waters.
Thought slipped through the open window
and her hands grew cold. The present encircled
my head, a dark, vaporous nimbus of reflection.
I pondered, suspended above my own cloud …
If my last breathe were to linger with wavering balance
upon the precipice of moment and destiny…
If time were to slip through my well versed and worn lips
until the morrow only and not a sunset more to my name,
Could I tip my hat to the fray
and slyly tuck a smile into your forever memory,
falling head first into eternity.
Again to the window,
I sought, but the light of the moon
had walked away into the dawn.

What Voice at Moth-Hour
By Robert Penn Warren
What voice at moth-hour did I hear calling
As I stood in the orchard while the white
Petals of apple blossoms were falling,
Whiter than moth-wing in that twilight?
What voice did I hear as I stood by the stream,
Bemused in the murmurous wisdom there uttered,
While ripples at stone, in their steely gleam,
Caught last light before it was shuttered?
What voice did I hear as I wandered alone
In a premature night of cedar, beech, oak,
Each foot set soft, then still as stone
Standing to wait while the first owl spoke?
The voice that I heard once at dew-fall, I now
Can hear by a simple trick. If I close
My eyes, in that dusk I again know
The feel of damp grass between bare toes,
Can see the last zigzag, sky-skittering, high,
Of a bullbat, and even hear, far off, from
Swamp-cover, the whip-o-will, and as I
Once heard, hear the voice: It's late! Come home.

Poem of the Month
~
A while back Davidmm suggested
that members take on the challenge
of creating a sonnet in a collaborative
effort. Members take turns adding
one line at a time. The added
challenge is that of making sure
the iamabic pentameter throughout
the entire sonnet is perfect, as well as,
keeping the rhyme in tact. Davidmm
has provided members with easy to
follow instructions, and has guided
them through the necessary changes
in order to make our Start/Stop Sonnet
a fun and learning experience.
Make Me Wanna Read More started
with a simple exercise thread to spark
creativity. The challenge was to write two
or three sentences totaling 25 words or
less to be used as opening lines to a
short story. Participation for this fun
and imaginative challenge was quite
active and many intriguing opening
lines were penned by our members.
The idea came to take it a step further,
periodically selecting the top five fav
entries and from those top 5 taking a vote
to select the 'opening lines' for Poetic
Horizons' Collaborative Short Story.
All this work and organizing and effort
has been under the moderation of
Vulcan13, with help from Secrets.
Vulcan13 has expanded upon the
"sentence" challenge creating separate
challenges for "paragraphs" and
"dialogue." Three cheers for Vulcan13!!
Three cheers for the MMWRM and all
who have participated!

Historic Carmel by AlaskanRambler
Along central California's coast
lies a stretch
of salty sands.
A sun scorched pier stands
on water weathered posts
soaked to the knees.
Breakers toss and churn.
Waves gently roll inland,
soft white foams
caress the moist beach,
planting a friendly kiss
on the sandy shore's cheek.
What a feeling
just watching
those many little sand pebbles
being moved as her sudsy ripples
penetrate the white sands.
Look closely!
See the water
and sand pebbles
slowly slipping
out to sea.

The Lion purred, it was soft thunder. "You do no harm;
even wild lions will welcome a hug in the snow."
He remained still, waiting for Peter to pull away which eventually he did.
"There is never shame or wrongdoing in
love if it is done for love's own sake."
Peter looked back to the table; felt the lion follow his gaze.
"Aslan... perhaps I should not ask, but if I may, why were you here tonight?
Why were you... there, tonight?"
